The Beautiful Pursuit

Written by
Floret

The Beautiful Pursuit is a three-part documentary created by Floret to share an honest and authentic look at flower farming from the point of view of those who do it. It includes more than thirty conversations with farmers around the world and explores both the challenges and triumphs of what is more than a career, but a calling.

The series delves into experiences rarely talked about publicly: the physical demands of flower farming on the body, the heartbreak of losing entire crops and infrastructure to weather, the financial juggling act of running a farm, as well as the strain farming places on relationships and family. But it also celebrates what makes this path extraordinary: the joy of bringing beauty into the world, our deep connection to nature, and the privilege of being part of life’s most significant moments through flowers.

The Beautiful Pursuit Chapter 1: Called by Flowers

People come to flower farming in a wide range of ways. Some knew it was what they wanted from when they were young, gardening with a grandparent. Others find it as a second or even third career. For some, it’s a way to heal, for others a path to advocacy. In the first chapter of the series, farmers discuss their motivations, which are as diverse as the individuals themselves. Everyone’s story is unique, but there are common threads—a desire to live intentionally, to work in harmony with the natural world, and to spread beauty and kindness through flowers.

The Beautiful Pursuit Chapter 2: Living the Dream

We hear this all the time: “Your job must be a dream—playing with flowers all day.” This chapter dives into the gap between public perception and the reality of flower farming. Behind each one of those beautiful photographs on social media are long hours of physical labor, careful crop planning, and complex business decisions. There are also massive weather disasters, pricing problems, insect infestations, and rabbits. In this chapter, farmers discuss the gap between impression and daily reality—sharing what they wish people understood about the true nature of their work.

The Beautiful Pursuit Chapter 3: Beauty Prevails

After all the setbacks, what drives flower farmers to get up each morning and begin again? The answers are practical and profound. What advice do they have? Embrace imperfection. While you can do everything ‘right,’ nature always has the final say. They speak of resilience as their most vital tool—finding both acceptance and joy during the hardest times. They understand that while this path challenges everyone who walks it, it also offers countless ways to succeed. There is space here for anyone willing to invest their heart and hands in the work. Despite the struggles, it remains beautiful, in all senses of the word.

About the Project

It all started with a simple question to flower farmers: “What do you wish people knew?” In the spring of 2024, when we surveyed thousands of flower farmers of different experience levels from around the world, a clear theme emerged. The overwhelming response revealed a desire to tell the whole story of what it takes to be a flower farmer—the challenges alongside the triumphs, the grit alongside the beauty.

Inspired by their heartfelt sharing, we decided to explore the idea further and set out on a 10-month-long journey that ultimately led to the creation of a documentary series called The Beautiful Pursuit.

In this video, Erin and director Rob Finch discuss the inspiration behind the project and the unique and unconventional way it was made, a true collaboration between farmers and filmmakers.

I have to start by saying this. I’m seriously only 7 minutes into the first video and I had to stop and come back here to comment. THANK YOU!! Thank you for your courses and the knowledge that you share. Thank you for your seeds and the enormous amount of hard work and time you put into them. Thank you for this mini series!! In the few first minutes, it pulled me into that time when I found this amazing thing called flower farming. How this joyous torture ( mind and sometime body) fills me more than can be expressed in words. Seeing other farmers, how they farm, where they farm. This is sooooo cool and I will come back soon to say more…. but I have to get back to the show. WOW!!! Once again you killed it. Thank you for sharing our world and what it takes. Moving, inspiring, heart breaking, soulful, aspirational, and filled with special tidbits that only other growers can bring to us. I didn’t count the amount of times that I said out loud, YES!! Oh my gosh!! YES, I get that, but it was a lot!! There have been so many times I have wished I had known about this 20 years ago, because it’s me, it’s who I am and what I’m here to do. Than I realize, I’m here now… and that’s all that matters!! God willing, I have many more years to learn and grow.

I just watched the series and loved every minute of it. Thank you to everyone involved in making this series and sharing all of this information. Thank you for the inspiration you have given this almost 64 year old to start growing a cut flower garden. It won’t be large scale but large enough to sell at my road side stand. Also to provide for the pollinators in my area. I have wanted to grow a cut flower garden for many years but have never done it because I know how much work it will be and growing my vegetables are a lot of work but I feel the flowers we be a lovely compliment to my garden. I am so grateful that a friend lent me your books Erin a few years ago and ever since I have watched the progress at Floret . Wishing you continued success.

It’s a beautiful tribute to the life of flower farming and just one more feather in your cap for all of the amazing things you do to inspire and inform, and I’m so grateful for it. I binge watched all three episodes and cried, and laughed and felt more inspired to keep going with the “beautiful pursuit”. This was just what I needed to remind me in this time of division, frustration and anxiety , there is beauty and there is always hope!

My goodness Erin……you are amazing. Please tell me when do you sleep? You never stop running out of ideas. You blow my mind. I am at the end of my flower gardening career. I am 77. I still am able to have a garden with English roses in it and flowers, my favorite….. the fox gloves. I have help in the garden and I’m grateful to them always because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to still have my garden. I am older now and riddled with arthritis. I constantly remember my younger days when I built this garden. I was always wishing I had some guidance. Thank goodness have lived long enough to see you and your team show up and light the way for the rest of the people. You blow my mind…… quite simply.

I am starting my 3rd year of flower farming. Man, so many times I wanted to just throw in the towel, thinking it was just me and I wasn’t getting it. But the drive and will to succeed keeps me going. Along with the feeling that I get when I walk through the flowers, and even more than that, when I deliver them and people just smile and call me the flower lady. I worked in the corporate world for so long, never feeling like I was really contributing to anything. But the flowers fulfill my soul. It’s hard to explain, you either get it or you don’t. Thank you Erin. This ole’ Tennessee gal sure appreciates you. :)

I can’t wait for the whole story. I can relate to the challenges, even tho I only have a little bit of space to plant flowers. Last year there was a new small space cleared by a fallen pine tree that was about 8′ x 5′ so I decided to put pretty things in it. I planted sweet peas, renunculus, etc. to further my cut-flower arranging. Not one of them came up! What came up instead was grass that was 4′ tall and a type I have never seen in my yard! HA!!! Thank you for all your hard work. This really inspires me to grow even more. YOU inspire me!

Don’t know how you all put a docu-series together that’s so much work! WOW! I REALLY appreciate the angle of this set of films. The sector of work I am in (creative strategy) – people romanticize and do this whole grass is greener- I want to do your job (type deal). Beg to intern. Mainly, I want to be like noooo- you really don’t want to do this. It takes a certain… temperament to pay your bills this way. People will then say “oh I didn’t make them feel good” which again would be a whole indicator to NOT pursue media. To do a series on growing that is REAL is a beautiful thing.

I have grown heirloom vegetables and flowers for 9 years now. For enjoyment. I can say there has been at least 3 big whoopsies (beyond my control or education level) that if growing had been my profession It would have undone me. But I will never get over the awe of a wee little seed turning into this beautiful plant and attracting this little system of creatures around it. And the enjoyment of making mud pies and being in the seritonine giving soil.

Oh my, I can’t wait to watch this. I started “farming” flowers on a teeny scale last year, just to give flowers to my friends, family and neighbors. My introduction to flower farming was you, Erin. Know that together, we put smiles on many people’s faces last spring and summer with surprise bouquets. Hoping to do a bit more this year, but have to juggle it with preparing for a house move and surgery recovery.

It makes sense to explore the part of this business that involves so much physical labor and emotional strength. I grow cut flowers on a small scale for personal use, and I’d love to do something on a bigger scale, but I have osteoarthritis that makes it really difficult to stand and be in constant motion day after day. It’s the only thing holding me back. The physical grind is something I don’t think I can handle. I’m very interested in seeing what the contributors to this series have to say about that.

Erin, I love the way you think about this community and business. You have a very special spirit and perspective that are both so bright and inspiring. Thank you for all the work you do to educate (and entertain!) us. Whether we are hobbyists or professionals, I think we have much to learn from you.
