Over the years, I’ve turned to online courses to dig deeper into all sorts of different topics ranging from creative photography to marketing to copywriting. Online courses can be a great way to learn more about a particular topic from the comfort of your own home.
I’ve spent more mornings than I can count perched at the dining room table with my laptop and a big mug of coffee scribbling notes as I watched online course videos. I’ve applied so much of what I’ve learned through these courses and our little farm business has benefited tremendously from these opportunities.
During our original brainstorming session for the Floret Online Workshop, I reflected back on which online courses were the very best and made a long list the things I loved and wanted to incorporate into ours. I also noted all the things I definitely did not want to do, or do wanted to do differently for our course. And I’m proud to say that we were able to accomplish all of them–plus more.
Here are 6 features that make the Floret Online Workshop unique.
First and foremost, this is truly a workshop. Unlike some online courses where the instructors upload a few videos and pdf’s and then walk away, the Floret Team and I will be right there alongside you throughout the 6-week course. The Floret Team and I will be posting discussion prompts, discussing the content and answering your questions during the weekly Q&A sessions.
Printed course packet. We will send this 250+ page book and other goodies from the farm to you in the mail! Even though the workshop is in a digital format, I know how important it is to have a physical copy of the course materials at your finger tips. That also means there’s no need to use a ream of paper and an entire box of ink cartridges to print out the course materials; we’ll send them to you! The Floret Team and I poured a lot of thought and love and intention into originally creating, and later expanding, this course packet. Chock full of handy resource guides, step-by step tutorials and worksheets this guide will save you dozens of research and trial and error.
Access to everything. Always. This is a feature that is really important to me. I’ve signed up for more than a few costly online courses only to learn later that access to the content expires after just one year. As a participant in the Floret Online Workshop, you’ll have lifetime access to the content, so you’ll be able to go back and re-watch the video tutorials season after season, without fear of them disappearing. Plus, you’ll get also get any new content we add to the course over time. For example, since we originally released the workshop, we’ve added at least a dozen new videos and expanded the resources available in the course packet. We will continue to add even more great content year after year and you will have access to it all.
Connect with our Online Support Team. If you have followed Floret for any length of time, you’ve likely heard me talk about Team Floret. I have the immense privilege of working alongside an amazing group of incredibly smart, talented, kind, generous (and hilarious!) teammates every day.
Over the years, I’ve also had the opportunity to have a number of successful flower farmers travel to the farm and join the Floret Team to help teach and support students at our on-farm workshops.
I invite many of these all-star flower farmers to, once again, be a part of Team Floret and share their flower farming experience and expertise with participants. Our team of experienced farmer-florists will provide additional support throughout the 6-week course.
And what’s so great about this group is that, collectively, they represent diverse zones and climates from the arid desert to extreme mountain elevations to the hot, humid climates of the south. They also bring expertise with various farmer-florist business models, including urban and rural markets in all different regions of the country.
See an entire growing season. One of the limitations of our on-farm workshops was the fact that attendees only were able to see the farm in one moment of time, limiting what we could demonstrate to participants. For example, we couldn’t show how to plant tulips or harvest dahlias and other high summer flowers at our spring workshops. Past attendees would also tell us that they wished they had taken better notes or gotten a little closer to see our demonstrations. The video tutorials in the Floret Online Workshop solve those problems! We filmed the videos over an entire growing season, so you can see the farm tasks in spring, summer and autumn. I know that I am a visual learner, so I need to see something done, ideally over and over again, for it to sink in. Our short video tutorials will allow you to learn at your own pace, view them in any order and revisit them anytime.
Find your flower “tribe.” The Floret Learning Community is a place where you can connect with other in the course, discuss the course content, ask questions, post progress photos, share ideas and connect with fellow flower fanatics. And yes, access to the Learning Community forum will continue on after the conclusion of the six-week course. I love seeing the connections, new friendships and professional relationships that have been made among participants. Plus, it is always fun to hear about Floret alumni reunions and other in-person events planned by workshop participants!
We have also been fielding follow-up questions from flower lovers who are considering enrolling, but want to know more specifics. Questions like:
I live in a different climate. Will the tutorials apply to me?
What if I don’t have a lot of experience growing flowers?
When does the workshop begin and how does it work?
So, we created a short little video (in the dahlia field!) to answer all of these and more.
If you are ready to jump start your flower business, I hope you’ll join me for the Floret Online Workshop class of 2019. Enrollment is open now through October 16th at 5 p.m. Learn more and register here.
